It is the dream of many big game hunters to someday be able to hunt at least one of the sheep species. The Dall Sheep of Alaska and northern Canada have been the most highly sought after as obtaining a tag has been the easiest of the four species. Over the counter tags were abundant and are still available in some places, but that is changing due to the immense pressure on these animals and recent population declines largely due to disease and winter die offs. With population declines and high demand for the available tags, the cost of a Dall sheep hunt has been on a steady incline putting a hunt out of reach for many sportsmen.

This hunt in the Chugach Mountains northeast of Anchorage has not followed the pricing rise of most Dall Sheep hunts. Though still a bit expensive, it is priced around half of what many other hunts cost. This is mostly due to the requirement of having to draw a tag. This reduced hunt rate is to encourage hunters to apply for the tag. Once a tag has been drawn, the quality of rams available are as good or better than any other place these sheep are pursued. Hunters will work hard as the Chugach Mountains are steep and rugged. Outwitting a sheep's uncanny eyesight and a keen sense of smell is a challenge for any hunter.

Applications for this hunt must be submitted to the Alaska Game and Fish by mid-December the year prior to the planned hunt and non-residents will be required to submit their applications with a guide listed. The odds of drawing are difficult but with a more reasonably priced hunt and the exceptional quality of rams available, it is a difficult hunt to ignore. Hunters will flown into the back country, where they will be guided 1x1 by a guide with years of sheep hunting experience. The flight into camp is included in the cost of the hunt. This aspect of the hunt is not contracted out as many outfitters do. This outfitter and several of his employees are licensed pilots and handle the transportation themselves.
